The philosophies and processes laid out in the book "Dianetics" became the basis for the religion known as Scientology. L Ron Hubbard himself became the guru of the religion and began collecting followers in the mid to late fifties.
By the early seventies, Hubbard had established quite a following, especially among the rich and famous. When L Ron Hubbard died in , Scientology was the "in" religion for multiple high profile celebrities.
After the death of its creator and leader, Scientology needed a new guru, and David Miscavige quickly emerged. At his side was his wife and right hand woman, Shelly Miscavige. From until , the couple ruled over Scientology together. David ruled with an iron fist, and Shelly carried out his orders dutifully. Then, in , Shelly essentially vanished. When people asked about her disappearance, they were sharply rebuked. Some who dug too far were punished. Shelly was seen briefly in , for her father's funeral, but other than that she hasn't been seen in public for ten years.
So what happened to Shelly Miscavige? There are plenty of theories, but really no one knows for sure. Here's some things we do know:.
Shelly's parents were Scientologists who constantly struggled to get by in the world. Her father was a variably successful handyman and her mother was emotionally unstable. Their faith in Scientology led them to leave their daughters in L Ron Hubbard's care when Shelly was only twelve years old. At that point in time, Hubbard was living on a boat in the middle of International Waters. Hubbard had been in the Navy and much of Scientology's structure was based on Naval structure.
On the boat, Hubbard was surrounded by high ranking Scientology officials called the "Sea Organization," known as "Sea Org" for short.
He made everyone refer to him as "The Commodore. Shelly was reportedly obsessed with Hubbard. She would sit at his feet and listen to him speak for hours. She obeyed his commands without question and went above and beyond to please him. She was a true believer in Hubbard himself and Scientology from a very young age.
David Miscavige's parents were also devoted Scientologists. David was raised with the religion and pursued it fervently. By the age of twelve he was regularly participating in "auditing" sessions with other Scientologists. When he was only 16 years old, he dropped out of school to become a member of "Sea Org," which meant signing a billion year contract devoting this life and all his next lives to Scientology and their mission to save the world.
By the time Miscavige was twenty-one he headed up a division of Scientology called the "All Clear" team, whose purpose was to handle the lawsuits that Scientology was frequently facing and quiet dissenters. Miscavige was close to Hubbard and became a trusted confidante, mostly because of how committed he was to Scientology. David and Shelly met at Scientology's "International Base," known as "Int Base" for short, when they were only fifteen years old.
They started dating in the late seventies and by the early eighties, when they were both in their early twenties, they were married. In , when L Ron Hubbard died, the scramble to replace him as the head of Scientology began. Scientology insiders who have since defected from the religion, say that there were a few candidates, but that David Miscavige ruthlessly fought his way to the top and claimed Hubbard's throne.
He claimed the title "Chairman of the Board" or "C. The two quickly took over the day to day operations of Scientology. They operated out of Scientology's headquarters, "Int Base," and surrounded themselves with "Sea Org" members who lived to do their bidding.
